Giannoulias Expands Partner Benefits

June 14, 2010

Alexi Giannoulias

Alexi Giannoulias, Illinois state treasurer and Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, announced today that he was expanding benefits for employees in the state’s Department of Treasure to allow greater leave time for same-sex couples. The treasurer’s order will allow employees in same-sex relationships all the benefits accorded to married couples by the Family and Medical Leave Act, including paid time off for the birth or adoption of a child, to care for a sick partner, and bereavement leave.

Giannoulias called the move “a step toward marriage equality.” The state already grants health care coverage to the same-sex partners of workers. Giannoulias is Greek Orthodox.

The event – designed to celebrate these families and dispel stereotypes – was arranged in response to inflammatory comments from former presidential candidate and Fox News commentator Mike Huckabee, who recently spoke out against same-sex marriage and the right of same-sex parents to adopt children.
