Election Results Are a Mixed Bag on LGBT Issues

November 3, 2010

Gov. Pat Quinn, Senator-Elect Mark Kirk

Bad news:

РSome of the strongest advocates of LGBT equality got voted out of office yesterday, including Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Rep. Patrick Murphy of Pennsylvania. It looks like it will be harder than ever to get pro-gay legislation through Congress now.

– Iowa voters unseated three state Supreme Court justices who had voted for marriage equality in 2009. This election, funded by sources outside the state, was clearly meant to have a chilling effect on judges nationwide.

– Gay marriage opponent Mark Kirk was elected to the U.S. Senate from Illinois.

Good news:

РA record 106 LGBT candidates were elected to office.

– Freedom to Marry also reports that a record number of pro-marriage equality candidates were elected nationwide yesterday.

– One columnist notes signs that religious voters are increasingly open to LGBT-friendly candidates.

– In Illinois, it appears that Gov. Pat Quinn has won re-election. While he opposes same-sex marriage, he does support civil unions. His challenger Bill Brady had proposed amending the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

Freedom to Marry Executive Director Evan Wolfson sums up yesterday’s results in this video:
