Rev. Suzanne Anderson-Hurdle, pastor of Good Shepherd Church in Romeoville, spoke eloquently at today’s clergy press conference in favor of the bill. The presence of supportive clergy surely helped to get this bill through the House of Representatives, so thanks to Rev. Anderson-Hurdle and all other clergy who have helped with this struggle!

We’re a Step Closer to Making History

The bill still awaits action from the Senate and the signature from governor, but things are looking good. If passed, the bill will go into effect next year.

Protestant Advocacy Group Endorses Civil Unions

Protestants for the Common Good, an Illinois advocacy organization, has endorsed House Bill 2234, the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act. The bill, which is expected to be brought up for a vote in the state legislature today, would grant recognition and rights similar to those or marriage. The bill would not require churches or other religious bodies to perform ceremonies for same-sex couples or recognize the relationships of same-sex couples.

With the civil unions bill likely coming up for a floor vote on Tuesday, NOW is the time to call your state representative and senator to let them know that you support this step forward for same-sex couples. Search for your representatives by entering you ZIP code.

While a phone call is the best way to be heard, e-mail works too and several organizations have set up easy web sites for the issue. Check out the Human Rights Campaign, Equality Illinois, and the AIDS Foundation of Chicago to take last-minute action now.
