Iceland today became the seventh European nation to legalize marriage for same-sex couples. This comes just a month after Portugal became number six.
The most remarkable piece of the story is that Iceland’s Parliament voted unanimously on the issue. Iceland is also notable for being the only nation in the world headed by an openly gay or lesbian head of state, Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir. Hooray for Iceland!
The other European nations allowing for marriage equality are Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden. Canada and South Africa also offer the freedom to marry for all.
Many other nations allow for civil unions or domestic partnerships, allowing for many of the rights associated with marriage.
