Welcome to the Blog

March 30, 2010

The Illinois Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry. Yes, our name is long, but every word is there for a reason.

Illinois РOf course, I believe that everyone in the United States (and indeed the world) should have the right to marry whomever they wish. But in reality, the U.,S. same-sex marriage movement has been a state-by-state movement. As of today, five states (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire, Vermont) plus the District of Columbia issue marriage certificates to same-sex couples. Nine other states (California, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, and Wisconsin) provide for legal arrangements known as domestic partnersips or civil unions that offer at least some of the rights of marriage.

By contrast, Illinois does not recognize same-sex marriage whatsover. It is time for Illinois to catch up and to lead!

Religious – Our purpose is to bring a uniquely religious perspective to this movement. All too often, people use religious beliefs as a justification for their prejudices against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Our coalition, on the other hand, find support for our passion for equality in faith traditions.

Coalition – Our coalition was originally started by leaders at the Second Unitarian Church of Chicago, but we are growing into a broad interfaith coalition from throughout the state.

Freedom to Marry РThis is our goal. I hope that this blog will have a role in advancing it.
